Skill of the Month - Sept. Welcome Back!

I would like to thank the educators of William Turner Technical High School of Miami for their generous hospitality.  They shared with us many of the ideas they used to turn their school around, one of which is the Skill of the Month!

For the first Skill of the Month, we will be working with something we all know to help us ease into the year: Graphic Organizers.  Ok, so it is not new and exciting, but Graphic Organizers (GO) can be an easy and fun way to introduce the idea of Skill of the Month and help our students organize and analyze information better!

Check out the flier/bookmark!  Graphic Organizers

Check out these links to ready-made GOs:

This site has some of the research behind GOs - http://www.cast.org/publications/ncac/ncac_go.html#applications

These are very basic GO sites. - http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/students/learning/lr1grorg.htm

Miss Manners A great source for a plethora of quandaries!   Have your students practice responding to other peoples' problems through letter writing:

http://lifestyle.msn.com/Relationships/Article.aspx?cp-documentid=27876&GT1=10013

Don't forget to add a rubric for letter writing:

Crossword makers How to create a crossword by hand.

I have my Ramp Up students create their own handmade crossword puzzles using words they collect during their independent reading and others from class instruction, and they enjoy the challenge.  There are two Word documents: a crossword blank and directions. Both should be printed on legal sized paper.  Enjoy!
